Notes - JOHN EDMUND SAMUEL MARCUS 1934-2011
John Samuel MARCUS was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 20 August 1934 and died in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on 7 January 2011. After his death, his ashes were scattered in tidal waters off Nova Scotia.
His father Dr. Samuel MARCUS was born on 25 February 1901 in Baronovichi, Belarus (White Russia), and died in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, on 24 January 1987. He and his wife Isobel are both interred in a family plot in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater.
From the Halifax Herald on 26 January, 1987:
"BRIDGEWATER -- Prominent South Shore family physician Dr, Samuel MARCUS , 84, 35 Pleasant Street, Bridgewater, died Saturday in South Shore Regional Hospital.
Born in Boronovitch (sic), White Russia, he was the son of the late Nathan and Gutta Marcus.
He immigrated with his family to Sydney Mines in 1910. He was educated in Sydney Mines and graduated from Dalhousie University Medical School in 1925. He established a practice in Bridgewater and became chief of surgery at Dawson Memorial Hospital. During his lengthy medical practice, he was honoured by both the Nova Scotia and Canadian medical societies.
He was active in a wide variety of community and provincial affairs, including the Royal Canadian Sea Scouts, The Bridgewater Board of School Commissioners and the Canadian Public Health Associastion.
He was a member of the Acacia Lodge AF and AM and recently was honoured with his 60 year jewel. He was a member of the Bridgewater Curling Club and an active outdoorsman.
He is survied by two daughters, Barbara, (Mrs. Sherman Zwicker),
Lunenburg; Anne, San Diego, Calif.: a son John, Dartmouth, five
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Isobel, a brother Max, and a sister Fania."
His mother Isobel MARCUS née CARTHEW was born on 21 July 1908 in Westville, Nova Scotia, otherwise known as Salt Springs, Pictou County. She died in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, on 9 July 1981.

BRIDGEWATER -- Mrs. Isobel MARCUS of Bridgewater died Thursday in Dawson Memorial Hospital, Bridgewater.
Born in Salt Springs, Pictou County, she was a daughter of the late Capt. and Mrs. Edmund J. CARTHEW.
She was a talented artist and a member of the Nova Scotia
Society of Artists and her painting (sic) are hung in many homes and galleries throughout Novia Scotia, including the Debrisay Museum in
Bridgewater. She had been active in many community organization (sic)
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Samuel Marcus; a son, John, Halifax; two daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Sherman Zwicker), Lunenburg; Ann, San Diego, Ca.,; and five grandchildren.
The body is in Sweeney's Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral service will be 4 p.m. today in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater, Archdeacon Gregory P. Pritchard, officiating, with burial in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater."
John Edmund MARCUS, Real Estate Agent, married Shirley Elizabeth EDGOOSE at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 13 November 1965. They had two children, Sarah and Penny, and later divorced.
