  • Notes
    • BUTCHER, George (1841-1911)

      George BUTCHER was born at Martock, Somerset, on 6 July 1841, son of William and Hannah BUTCHER.
      (GRO September Q 1841 Yeovil 10 516)

      William BUTCHER, described as a labourer on the birth certificate, had married Hannah TALBOT at Martock on 25 December 1829.
      (Phillimore)

      His granddaughter Brenda May EDGOOSE (formerly TURNER) said that her mother used to say that her father liked a drink - taken to imply that he was a drunkard.

      From the 1851 census of North Street, Martock:
      William BUTCHER, head, aged 42, coal carrier, born at Martock;
      Hannah BUTCHER, wife, aged 39, husband's assistant, born at Martock;
      Jane BUTCHER, daughter, aged 20, glove sewer, born at Martock;
      Thomas BUTCHER, son, aged 18, coal carrier, born at Martock;
      Amelia BUTCHER, daughter, aged 17, glove sewer, born at Martock;
      Emley (sic) BUTCHER, daughter, aged 15, glove sewer, born at Martock;
      Henry BUTCHER, son, aged 12, assists in carrying coals, born at Martock;
      *George BUTCHER, son, aged 10, born at Martock;
      Ellen BUTCHER, daughter, aged 7, born at Martock;
      James BUTCHER, son, aged 3, born at Martock;
      Susan BUTCHER, daughter, aged 1, born at Martock;
      Frederick BUTCHER, grandson, aged 1, born at Martock.
      (HO107/1930/5/3)

      At the time of the 1861 census of Bell Yard, High Street, Taunton, Somerset George BUTCHER was a 21 year old ostler working for inn keeper George OSMOND.
      (RG9/1616/31/34)

      He married Ellen COOPER at St. Pancras Church in the Parish of St. Pancras, Middlesex, on 31 July 1865. He was a bachelor of full age, a coachman living at Frederick Street, and son of William BUTCHER, a fruit dealer. Ellen COOPER was a spinster of full age, living at Oonaburgh Street, and daughter of Thomas COOPER, a farmer. Witnesses were Alexr T. TAYLOR and Mary PENN.
      (GRO September Q 1865 Pancras 1b 142)

      ELLEN COOPER's presence in London is surprising, given that she does not seem to have been in employment. She may have been staying with a member of her family - in the 1881 census of Back Street, Petworth, Sussex, 75 year old Kirford born Edward COOPER had his granddaughter living with him and his family as a domestic servant: Sarah J. COOPER was 19 and was born at St. Pancras, Middlesex.

      The 1871 census of College Street, Petersfield, Hampshire:
      *George BUTCHER, head, aged 28, coachman/domestic servant, born at Martock, Somerset;
      Ellen BUTCHER, wife, aged 29, born at Kirdford, Sussex;
      George A. BUTCHER, son, aged 5, scholar, born at Kirdford;
      Agnes Ellen BUTCHER, daughter, aged 1, born at Petersfield.
      (RG10/1220/44/20)

      The following children have been identified:
      Albert George BUTCHER, born between 1864 and 1866
      Agnes Ellen BUTCHER, born in 1870
      Harriet BUTCHER, born in 1872
      Ada Louisa BUTCHER, born in 1875
      Lllie Emily BUTCHER, born in 1878
      Florence Emma BUTCHER, born in 1881
      Mabel Mary BUTCHER, born on 1 December 1883

      He is listed in the 1881 census returns at The Square, Petersfield, Hampshire:
      *George BUTCHER, head, aged 39, a licensed victualler, born at Martock, Somerset;
      Ellen BUTCHER, wife, aged 40, born at Kirdford, Sussex;
      Agnes E. BUTCHER, daughter, aged 11, scholar, born at Petersfield;
      Harriet BUTCHER, daughter, aged 8, scholar, born at Petersfield;
      Ada L. BUTCHER, daughter, aged 6, scholar, born at Petersfield;
      Lilley E. BUTCHER, daughter, aged 2, born at Petersfield.
      There were also six unmarried lodgers:
      Thomas HALPIN, aged 55, born in Ireland, a bricklayer's labourer;
      William F. CHAPMAN, aged 28, born at Hatcham, Kent, a painter;
      Thomas LLOYD, aged 20, born at Glamorgan in Wales, a carpenter;
      Robert SMITH, aged 59, born at Swaffham, Norfolk, a painter;
      John SEWARD, aged 38, born at Godmanchester, Huntingdonshire, a blacksmith;
      James WILLIAMS, aged 30, born at Chichester, Sussex, a general labourer.
      (RG11/1240/60/4)

      He was described as an innkeeper when his daughter Mabel Mary was born at The Square, Petersfield, in December 1883.
      (GRO March Q 1884 Petersfield 2c 145)

      By 1891 he had moved to the Bricklayer's Arms, Selborne, Hampshire:
      *George BUTCHER, head, aged 50, licensed victualler, born Martock, Somerset;
      Ellen BUTCHER, wife, aged 50, born at Kirdford, Sussex;
      Agnes E. BUTCHER, daughter, aged 21, born at Petersfield;

      Flora E. BUTCHER, daughter, aged 9, born at Petersfield;
      Mabel M. BUTCHER, daughter, aged 7, born at Petersfield.
      (RG12/951/95/14)

      According to the 1901 census returns for Peabody Road, Farnborough, Hampshire, he was 58 years old, a baker and confectioner and shopkeeper ("own account"), and had been born in Taunton, Somerset (RG13/1103/79/6). At the same address were his wife Ellen BUTCHER aged 60, born Petersfield, Hampshire; his daughter Lillie BUTCHER aged 22, born Petersfield, Hampshire; his daughter Mabel BUTCHER , aged 17, born Petersfield, Hampshire; visitor John GILMORE, unmarried, 28, and a private soldier born in Upper Clapton, London; and boarder William ABBOT, a 50 year old widowed general shoe and boot maker born at Portsmouth, Hampshire.

      Ada Louisa PRATT, wife, aged 36, married 15 years, born at Petersfield.
      (RG14PN6255/RG78PN297/RD109/SD2/ED5/SN62)

      The death of a George BUTCHER aged 68 was registered in 1911.
      (GRO September 1911 Hartley W. 2c 248)
      He and his wife were buried in the Victoria Road Cemetery, Farnborough, Hampshire:
