      "ILMINSTER MONTHLY COUNTY PETTY SESSIONS
ASSAULTS. - John TAVENDER, alias John WHITE, of Stoke-sub-Hamden, was charged with an aggravated assault upon Sarah Ann BUTCHER, a young woman, of South Petherton, on the 12th October. Complainant stated that on the day in question she met defendant near the George Inn, and he asked her to drink, but she refused. They then went into the Bell Inn. After they came out they went up the road, and defendant threw her down under a hedge. She "commenced to holler 'Murder' as loudly as she could holler," and escaped defendant, who tore her jacket. Afterwards she "fell away" for two hours all but ten minutes. Defendant accused her of stealing 5s., but she was as innocent as a baby. Sarah WHINES, of Pitney, South Petherton, said she heard a cry of "Murder." Elizabeth BISGOOD, also of Pitway, a sister of the last witness, gave similar testimony.
Caroline IRELAND, another sister, stated what she heard a week after the occurence. Mr. PAULL, for the defence, said defendant was in company with the complainant, on the night in question, and afterwards missed two half-crowns. He went for a policeman, but he was not at home; complainant heard of this, and at once took out an assault summons. One of the half-crowns was afterwards picked up in the road. The chairman said the Bench were unanimous in considering that the assault was proved, and fined defendant 10s. and 15s. 6d. costs. Allowed a month to pay."
