  ARTHUR BAILEY VICKERS 1917-1958 The birth of Arthur B. VICKERS was registered in 1917. Arthur Bailey VICKERS was born at Mansfield Woodhouse on 10 April 1917. No father's name was recorded on the birth certificate, but it is known that he was Alphonso Miles BAILEY. His parents were to have been married on his first leave from the Royal Navy but Alphonso was killed when HMS Raglan was sunk in the Dardanelles on 20 January 1918. The BAILEY family knew him as he used to visit them. Ethel VICKERS is said to have received an allowance from the Royal Navy for Alphonso's son. (GRO June Q 1917 (VICKERS) Mansfield 7b 121) (Stephanie GRIEVE) When, as a 22 year old single clerk, Ethel left Plymouth for Auckland, New Zealand, on 15 January 1920 aboard the Athenic it was her intention to send for her son Arthur as soon as she and her future husband Reginald CALVERT had established themselves on a Returned Serviceman's farm. Unfortunately the price of butter fat collapsed in the recession of the 1920s and they were forced to abandon the farm in 1927, never earning enough money to send for Arthur. Much later, Ethel tried to persuade Arthur to join them in New Zealand but he refused to leave either the grandfather who had brought him up and or his work in the market garden adjoining the shop in Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. Two events may have had a life-changing effect on Arthur: Eleven hours of relentless bombing of the city of Coventry began in early evening of 14 November 1940 and the death of his grandfather aged 67 (GRO December Q 1940 Mansfield 7b 94). As he had been delivering vegetables to the city and never returned to Mansfield Woodhouse to collect his bicycle it was assumed that he had died in the air raids. He was seen in London during the onslaught of the doodlebugs (V1s) which began on 13 June 1944 and ended when the last launch pad within range of London was overrun in October that year. The family tried in vain to contact him and eventually decided that he had been killed in one of the raids. If he had not been killed, he had certainly vanished into thin air. In all probability he had received his call-up papers in 1940 and was serving in one of the three armed services or in a reserved occupation. Ethel always had a photograph of Arthur in her bedroom but it was not until 1964 that she shared her secret and memories with her granddaughter Stephanie just before she left New Zealand to visit England for the very first time. Ethel herself came back to England in 1967, forty seven years after her departure. Arthur Bailey VICKERS can be found in the Electoral Rolls at D'Ablay Street in 1947, 1949, 1951, 1956, and 1957. The marriage between Arthur B. VICKERS and Lily V. CONNOLLY was registered in 1958. Arthur B. VICKERS was a 40 year old bachelor, a chef. He gave his father's name as Alphonso Bailey VICKERS (deceased), Lieutenant RN! Lily Vivian CONNOLLY was a 58 year old widow. His address was 21 D'Arblay Street, Westminster, and his occupation restaurant chef.
