Alphonso was a very gifted young man. He educated himself far beyond the normal scope of education....(next bit obscured by advertising popup!)
society as a repairer of shoes and did so well that he decided to establish himself in his own business in a neighbouring town known as Mansfield Woodhouse suburb of Mansfield Nottinghamshire.During the course of the First World War Alf was conscripted and served in the British Navy with the rank of Able Seaman. He wrote several accounts of the various places he was stationed mainly in Malta in the Med.. sea finally he was assigned to HMS Raglan, which was one of the ships lost in the Battle of Jutland 20th January.
In the days of WW1 there was no radio so news of the battles and casualties had to come via the newspapers. It chanced he was a visitor of the reading room of the Public Library where he read the newspapers thoroughly. He read in the newspaper the account of the Battle of Jutland and the fact that his son's ship was involved and had been sunk.
Alfred was a man who felt things very deeply but didn't talk much. He realised what a terrible blow this news would be to his wife so he decided there was no use in troubling her mind until the official notification came through. He said nothing to anyone what he had read, meanwhile the letters from Alf written prior to the battle kept arriving in the mail. It took several months for the actual notification of Alf's loss to be received in the mail.
Alf was never accounted for but listed as Missing in Action. His death was a great sorrow to his Mother who lived in hope that perhaps he had lost his memory. He was a very friendly person with a lot of friends.
When their daughter Effie Hannah wanted to marry a Morman the Parents were against it, but after their son died they consented to the marriage.....
I think this was written by one of Effie's decendants as it sounds word of mouth family stories about their Uncle. The dates for the marriage dont match either! I think they grudgingly consented and became reconciled after Alphoso's death
