Biographies
EDGOOSE, James (1791-????)
James, son of John and Sarah EDGOOSE of Sutterton, Lincolnshire, was baptised at Sutterton on 29 November 1791.
(PR)
John EDGOOSE had married Sarah LAWSON at Sutterton on 19 July 1791.
At the trial for highway robbery at Lincoln in March 1822 of his brother-in-law John ROGERS, his brother William EDGOOSE, and his father John EDGOOSE, he was said to be living in adultery with Rebecca BURTON who had been separated from her husband for "three quarters of a year". John ROGERS was hanged.
The following passage appeared in the Stamford Mercury on 28 June 1822: "On Thursday the 20th inst. three sons of the notorious EDGOOSE of Holland Fen, were placed in the stocks for three hours, in the parish of Algarkirk, for gambling on Sundays. - They are such hardened offenders, that the punishment was only laughed at." Two of the three sons were undoubtedly James and William EDGOOSE.
His father, John EDGOOSE (1766-1833), was said at his trial in 1831 to have been the father of sons who were "expatriated for felonies". No further trace of James EDGOOSE or his brother William has been found.
