Mary Elizabeth, daughter of James HOLMES and Eliza née BREWSTER, was born at Fosdyke, Lincolnshire, on 31 March 1881. The informant was her father James HOLMES of Fosdyke, a farm labourer.

The 1911 census of 5 Broad Street, Sheerness, Kent, lists Mary Elizabeth HOLMES, a 30 year old single confectionary manageress boarding with Edward James ALLEN, journeyman baker, and his family. Her place of birth was said to be Boston, Lincolnshire.

The marriage between Priesthood HUTCHINGS and Mary Elizabeth HOLMES took place at the Free Christian Church, Hall Gate, Doncaster, Yorkshire on 19 March 1914. Priesthood HUTCHINGS was a 24 year old bachelor, a potter, of 32 King Street, Blue Towown, Sheerness, Kent, and son of Priesthood HUTCHINGS, a dockyard labourer. Mary Elizabeth HOLMES was a 32 year old spinster of no occupation and daughter of James HOLMES, a trade union official. She gave the address of her parents, 4 St. Vincent Avenue, Wheatley, as her residence at the time of marriage. The witnesses were W. HOLMES and Ethel HUTCHINGS.

Her father James Headgoose HOLMES died aged 73 on 1 October 1934 at 16 Brunner Road, Brentham, Ealing, Middlesex. His occupation was an Organiser for the National Union of Railwaymen (retired). The informant was his (second) wife Elsie Mary HOLMES.

Probate of the will was granted on 22 November 1934 to his widow Elsie Mary HOLMES of 16 Brunner Road, Ealing, Middlesex; to his son John Thomas HOLMES a commercial clerk of 23 Selby Road, Ealing; and to his son William HOLMES a commercial clerk also of 16 Brunner Road, Ealing. His effects totalled £6,476.3s.2d. He left £100 to his daughter Mary Elizabeth HUTCHINGS; £50 each to John Thomas HOLMES, William HOLMES and to his granddaughter HILDA HOLMES, the daughter of his deceased son Charles; and £25 to May HOLMES, the widow of Charles.
She attended her father's funeral in 1934 but the newspaper report does not give either her first name or surname. She is referred to simply as James HOLMES' daughter.

Her brother William HOLMES moved from a private hotel in Torquay, Devon, to live with her and her husband in Colchester in about 1950. He died on 3 February 1953 whilst living at 190 St. Andrews Avenue.
