EDGOOSE, Elizabeth (1812-1881), wife of William GRAYBURN (1812-1879)
Elizabeth EDGOOSE was baptised at West Walton, Norfolk, on 4 October 1812, daughter of John and Mary EDGOOSE. John EDGOOSE had married Mary STANTON at West Walton on 12 May 1796.
She was unmarried when she lent her brother money on 25 October 1834.

Elizabeth EDGOOSE, a West Walton spinster, married William GRABURN bachelor of Wisbech St. Peter, Cambridgeshire, at Wisbech St. Peter by licence on 30 December 1834. She made her mark instead of signing her name. Witnesses were William ROBINSON and Elizabeth (x) HALL.
On 16 May 1836 the West Walton Coleraine Manor Court Book recorded that Robert EDGOOSE partially surrendered three roods and twenty seven perches of land on Churchend Common, West Walton, to the use of Elizabeth EDGOOSE of West Walton, spinster, on 25 October 1834. There is reference to "such principal sum of money together with such interest for the same at such time and in such manner as is mentioned in a certain Indenture bearing even date with the said present Surrender".

The 1860 Grimsby and Cleethorpes Directory lists William GRAYBURN, master mariner, at Lower Burgess Street, Grimsby.
The 1861 census of seamen lists Elizabeth GRABURN, aged 43, Master's wife, born West Maldon, Norfolk (= West Walton, Norfolk) and William GRABURN, aged 45, Master, born Hull, Yorkshire, on the vessel 'Providence' of Grimsby.

The West Walton Court Book dated 31 December 1862 records Robert EDGOOSE's partial surrender of three roods and twenty seven perches of land on Churchend common, West Walton, in consideration of £200 received from Mary Ann MEDLAND spinster of St. Neots, Huntingdonshire. The rate of interest on the principal sum was set at 5%. On the same day William GRABON of Grimsby, Merchant Captain, and Elizabeth his wife ("before her marriage Elizabeth EDGOOSE spinster") acknowledged full satisaction of a debt owing to Elizabeth EDGOOSE since 25 October 1834:
"EDGOOSE, Robert to Elizabeth EDGOOSE - Acknowledgement of Satisfaction on Conditional Surrender from -
At this Court an acknowledgement and authority in writing bearing date the Second day of October one thousand eight hundred and sixty two is certified by the Deputy Steward and also presented by the Homage in the words or to the effect following (that is to say) 'The Manor of West Walton formerly the Dukes and since Lord Coleranes (sic) on the part of West Walton. - We William GRABON of Grimsby in the County of Lincolnshire Merchant Captain and Elizabeth GRABON his Wife (before her marriage Elizabeth EDGOOSE Spinster do acknowledge to have received from Robert EDGOOSE of West Walton in the County of Norfolk Yeoman full payment and satisfaction of all monies due to us or either of us on a certain Conditional Surrender bearing date date the twenty fifth day of October one thousand eight hundred and thirty four made from the said Robert EDGOOSE to the said Elizabeth EDGOOSE and we authorise and direct the Steward of the said Manor to enter satisfaction on the Court Rolls of the said Manor accordingly Dated this Second day of October one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two William GRABON - Elizabeth GRABON - Witness to both signatures - J. F. BALDING clerk to Mr. W. L. OLLARD - Solr. - Upwell.'
And satisfaction is thereupon entered accordingly".

Her husband William GRAYBURN (sic) died of Erysipilas and Exhaustion at West Walton, Norfolk, on 11 July 1879 at the age of 66. He was described as a 'sailor (Captain)'. His nephew Stanton EDGOOSE was present when he died.

Elizabeth GRABURN died at Caistor Union Workhouse, Caistor, Lincolnshire, on 14 December 1881. She was said to be 69 years old and late of Gt. Grimsby. The informant was F. T. SHIPLEY, master of the workhouse.

It states that he was born at Hull, Yorkshire, in 1812 and had been employed in the capacities of App Mate & Master for 22 years in the British Merchant Service in the Coasting Trades. It bears his signature: William GRABURN.
1869: Lloyd's Captains' Register contains no reference to the name GRABON, GRABURN, or GRAYBURN.

On 17 June 1874 the Grimsby Observer (page 2 column 4) contains an advertisement for the sale of fishing smacks in London by order of the mortgagee, amongst them the "Providence", 27 tons O.M., 14 tons N.N.M..
William GRAYBURN (sic) died of Erysipilas Exhaustion at West Walton, Norfolk, on 11 July 1879 at the age of 66. He was described as a 'sailor (Captain)'. His nephew Stanton EDGOOSE was present when he died.
