"She signed herself E. A. HINCHCLIFF but was always known as Alison.
After a difficult childhood, from her mid teens Alsison struggled valiantly with Schizophrenia. However, she trained as a nurse, fulfilling a childhood dream, as described in a letter dated October 1951 to her cousin Wendy WOOD in Tasmania. At the time fourteen year old Alison was attending Trinity Hall in Southport, Lancashire.
...last Saturday we went to the pictures in the evening. We went to see "The Lady With a Lamp" at the Regal. It was lovely. It was all about Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War & her life afterwards. It made me cry a lot, but neverthheless really enjoyed it. I don't know whether I have ever told you, but when I grow up, I want to be a Nurse and so when I heard we were going to see that film I was thrilled. There were some Nurses from the Infimary there, one of which I knew from the time I was in the Infirmary last term. They were giving leaflets out on Nursing, & I got one of each kind. There were four altogether, & now I treasure them!"
(nurse, spinster)
