John, son of Joseph OLDFIELD, butcher, and Anne, was born on 6 June 1824 and baptised at West Walton, Norfolk, on 11 July the same year.

John OLDFIELD, a bachelor of full age and a labourer from West Walton, son of Joseph OLDFIELD, butcher, married Hannah READER at the Independent Chapel, Castle Square, Wisbech St. Peter, Cambridgeshire, on 7 April 1845. Hannah READER was a spinster of full age, daughter of William READER, a labourer. She made her mark. Witnesses were Joseph GREGORY and Sarah PINDER.

According to the Judith Littleford Lee tree (Judith Lee: powercat3@earthlink.net) he was born on 31 May 1823 and married Hannah .......... in England on 7 April 1845. He and his wife, together with brother Jesse E. OLDFIELD, Benjamin BATTERHAM and his wife, and a Mr. and Mrs. ATWOOD, arrived in New York on the ss Victoria on 28 May 1845. He became a very wealthy man in and around Downers Grove, Illinois, giving land and $2000 for the public library of that city.
They had one daughter, Elizabeth OLDFIELD, who was born on 10 December 1845.
The 1850 census of DuPage County, Illinois, lists the following:
John OLDFIELD, aged 26, farmer, born in England;
Hannah OLDFIELD, aged 30;
Elizabeth M. OLDFIELD, aged 5;
*Jesse OLDFIELD, aged 24, farmer, born in England;
William OLDFIELD, aged 21, farmer, born England.
A John OLDFIELD was an Overseer of the Poor for Downer's Grove Township in 1856 and 1857 and a J. OLDFIELD was a Commissioner of Highways in 1857 (http://patsabin.com/dupage/downersofficers.htm).
John OLDFIELD is also on the 1860 census with wife Hannah and their children, and on the 1870 census with Hannah, a servant and two farm labourers.
In 1860 John OLDFIELD's land was valued at $6000 and his brother JESSE's at $3200.

NOTES & QUERIES:
1) The 1850 census also lists a John OLDFIELD aged 45 (i.e. born 1804-1805), his wife Amy and six children. Five of the children were born in England, but the youngest, 2 year old Henry, was born in Canada.
