| 750 | CISS HARLEY 1889-1985 [UNCONNECTED PERSON] Early in 2001 an enquiry was received from Mrs. Penny SCHARNING about a factory called 'The Edgoose Albion Works' at Farnborough or Aldershot, Hampshire, during the 1914-1918 War. One of her great aunts volunteered for war work in 1914 and was sent to this factory. She spent six months on the hangar floor making aeroplanes and then was transferred to the offices. One of her nephews inherited her estate when she died including an autograph book containing entries from Edgoose Albion employees, friends, and English, Dutch and French pilots. Michael James Edgoose replied that the business was probably that of his grandfather, Mr. W.L. EDGOOSE of Albion Works or Albion Sawmills, Church Lane East, Aldershot. His first reaction was that the story of aircraft production was fanciful or confused. Then he remembered that during the Second World War they built lifeboats at the Aldershot premises and that anything was possible even if improbable. He was four or five years old when he saw them in 1943 or 1944. An explanation came from Penny SCHARNING. She described two autograph books, one with 102 entries, mostly initialled or signed with christian names. This is the one that contains most of the pilots' signatures followed by the initials RAF or A AID, and all dated around 1915-1916. The initials RAF would have stood for Royal Aircraft Factory before it became the RAE. The Royal Air Force (RAF) was not formed until 1 April 1918. The AID was the Aircraft Inspection Department, formed in 1913. The second book was of great interest. On the first page was written: "Presented to Miss Harley By The Employees of the Edgoose Albion Works Together with a Fitted Handbag. As a small token of esteen [sic?], for the unfailing courtesy shewn towards us, during our work together, On the occasion of her leaving Aldershot. February 1st 1918." This basically centred on the page. There are 59 entries in this second book. To Ninety-two year old Raymond Thomas James EDGOOSE everything made sense. He remembered a lady who worked for his father in the First World War. He said that she was his father's office staff, i.e. the firm was so small that she was the onlnlnly staff employee other than those on the shop floor. He said she came from Coventry and went home the day before the great raid that destroyed the city (yes, he was getting confused with World War II) and they never saw or heard from her again and assumed that she had been killed. He emphasised that he can only just remember her because he would have been only about 7 or 8 at the time. For Penny SCHARNING too everything made sense. She said she had never disclosed that her great aunt and the rest of the family came from Coventry. She knew that Aunt Ciss and her grandmother went to work in Farnborough, but her grandmother worked only at the RAE. The family knew that Ciss was working in an office - she had been a book-keeper in Coventry before the war. She was in her mid-twenties when she went to Farnborough, born in 1889, but she certainly didn't die in any air-raid and survived until 1985.
