| 2855 | JAMES ENSOR 1779-1868 James, son of Thomas and Elizabeth ENSOR, clerk of the Chapel, was baptised at St. Michael, Highgate, Middlesex, on 11 July 1779. (PR) He appears in the Navy Lists as 2 Lt Royal Marines between September 1797 and June 1802. (Mike Young - see below) James ENSOR married Elizabeth RAINFORD at Wallasey, Cheshire, on 8 June 1800. In the marriage entry (Cheshire Records Office) James is described as "of HM Navy" (In England the Royal Marines are attached to the Royal Navy). He lived in Ghent from 1824 until 1832 and was a manufacturer and dealer in tulle. In the 1820s he invented and patented a new type of machine for making lace and tulle. The patent expired in 1833. In 1826 he and his family acquired Dutch Nationality (Belgium was then still a part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands). He was a member of the Ghent Horseguards and as such played a small role in the Belgian Revolution of 1830. He left Ghent in 1832. (RG9/23/94/18) The death of James ENSOR aged 88 was registered in 1868. (GRO March Q 1868 Kensington 1a 109) He was buried in Highgate Cemetery. the inscription on his grave reads: "To the memory of James Ensor, of Hammersmith, Esq., who died January 18th, 1868, in his 80th year". (National Probate Registry 1868) NOTES & QUERIES: Whilst the above references to James ENSOR clearly refer to the same person, and Emma DOWSETT was his servant in 1841, 1851 and 1861, there are some discrepancies: 1) Place of birth: In 1841 he stated that he was born in Middlesex. In 1851 he stated that he was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire. In 1861 he stated that he was born in Highgate, Middlesex. He was certainly baptised there in 1779. 2) Occupation: In 1841 he stated that he was of independant means. In 1851 he stated that he was a retired shipowner and fund holder. | 2856 | JAMES FREDERIC ENSOR 1833-1887 According to Nick GRIBBLE he was born in Brussels, Belgium, on 27 October 1833. He was baptised at St. Mary's, Worsbrough, Yorkshire, on 27 December 1835, son of James Frederick ENSOR and Anne (sic). (FamilySearch) James Frederic ENSOR, born in Brussels of English parents, was a cultivated man who studied engineering in England and Germany. On 17 October 1854 he enrolled at the faculty of medicine at the Rheische Friedrich Wilhems University in Bonn, Germany, but left at the end of the academic year. He returned to England and worked as a civil engineer. He met his future wife, Marie Catherine Louise HAEGHEMAN whilst holidaying in Ostend, Belgium, with his parents. He married her in Ostend on 4 May 1859. Not long after the birth of their first child, James Sidney ENSOR, on 13 April 1860 he left alone for the United States in an attempt to find work as a civil engineer. His plans were thwarted by the outbreak of hostilities which led to the Civil War and he returned to Belgium a few months later. The birth of his daughter, Mariette, followed on 29 August 1861. She came to be known as 'Mitche'. Ostend was a small seaside resort town. Marie followed in her parents' footsteps and opened a souvenir and gift shop to support the family. The shop sold Chinese goods, seashells, and Carnival masks, elements that were eventually to have a strong influence on their son James Sidney ENSORS's art. James Frederic ENSOR ran the HAEGHEMAN shop with little enthusiasm and even less expertise. By 1875 the business was insolvent and the HAEGHEMANs assumed control of the finances. In a letter he wrote to the Belgian critic Jules du Jardin dated 28 October 1899 his son James Sidney ENSOR, the famous painter, provided some insight into the life of his parents: "My father married in Ostend in 1859. He was a very knowledgeable man who spoke several languages. Remarkably handsome and prodigiously strong. He had a high forehead and his whole appearance bore the stamp of majesty. He always inspired a kind of fearful respect in me. He truly was a superior man. He was knowledgeable in many fields. He had extraordinary musical abilities. He had pursued serious studies at the universities of Heidelberg and Bonn. He was familiar with the most complex scientific questions, the hardest calculations were child’s play to him. Old people in Ostend still speak of him with admiration and enthusiasm. He was a perfect gentleman. His projects, too vast and beyond the grasp of the doctrinaire bourgeois of the time, were not appreciated and, worse still, distorted and all his great goals and lofty projects were thwarted. Over time my father was deeply hurt by the attitude of the Ostend public, composed at that time largely of hoteliers who had made a lot of money, brewers, ship-owners, exploitative merchants, who had become enemies of any innovative advance; he preferred to cut himself off completely and afterwards sought the company of more humble people. He died in 1886. My mother, daughter of Ostend sea-shell sellers, continued her parents’ trade and I spent my childhood in the paternal shop surrounded by curiosities from the sea." James HUBBARD was a 24 year old bachelor, a West Walton labourer, and son of James HUBBARD, labourer. Witnesses were Harold James EDGOOSE and Edith Maud EDGOOSE. (GRO June Q 1912 Wisbech 3b 1351) On 28 January 1927 James Henry HUBBARD filed a petition for divorce on the grounds of his wife Carrie Elizabeth's frequent adultery from 1 December 1924 onwards at 41 Alexander Road, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, with John Edward SPARKES of the same address . He said that he married Carrie Elizabeth EDGOOSE at West Walton Parish Church on 24 April 1912 and lived firstly at Woodbine Cottage, West Walton, and lastly at Crescent Passage, Wisbech. He was a nurseryman of 49 Osborne Road in the City of Leicester and his wife Carrie Elizabeth HUBBARD had no occupation and lived at 41 Alexander Road, Wisbech. Both Carrie Elizabeth HUBBARD and John Edward SPARKES claimed that they were not guilty of adultery as claimed in the Petition. On 25 October the same year the Court found that James Henry HUBBARD had proved the contents of his Petition and granted him a divorce. He obtained a Decreee Absolute on 7 May 1928.
