They lied about their ages, saying that they were 21. According to her granddaughter Gillian THAIN (nee LAIGHT) it was understood that Ellen would marry a man called HOLMES whose family were market gardeners in Acle. Ellen obviously had other ideas: one Sunday afternoon she went for a walk, met William LAIGHT at the Turnpike, and eloped to Norwich with him in his pony and trap. Richard LEEDER was extremely displeased by the scandaal it caused in the village. Sometime later William LAIGHT received a message to say that all was forgiven and that Mr. LEEDER wanted him to come to Acle for a talk. He set off in the pony and trap, but on reaching the Acle Turnpike he met a good friend who told him the message came not from Mr. LEEDER but from the HOLMES brothers who were waiting for him near the church. William LAIGHT at once returned to Norwich. Eventually all was forgiven and by 1868 they were living in Acle.
